R U Connected and Safe

In today’s fast pace society you are never out of touch.  The craze to be connected is at an all-time high and it is not just the youth of today.  With the advancement of technology also comes responsibility because of the content that is available on the internet.  So what do parents need to know to keep their children safe from making irresponsible decisions?

                                Tips for parents:

1.       Educate yourself in understanding the technology
You need to first make sure you understand the device your child is using so you know its capabilities and functions. You will need to educate your child on what they should post and what they should not post about themselves.  If you think you can stop your child from going on the internet you will be surprised that they will find a way without your permission.  Children are naturally curious and want to know.  You need to set-up a positive learning environment for your child and one that you control.  Set good parameters and monitor our child’s activity.  The rules are very important and educate your child not to post personal information or pictures with their name available on the internet.  It is very easy to locate people today by just having a name or small bits of personal information.

2.        Find a filter and tracking software
A filter for your internet is a must be even then it does not ensure that your child’s searches are safe.  New sites pop up all the time and have to be added to the filter by the company.  If you want to know what your child is texting there is software such as Mymobilewatchdog.com.  You can find more information at your local technology store or look online by doing specific searches.

3.        Who’s in charge
More often than not you have purchased this device for your child.  They will test their parameters and how much you are willing to bend the rules.  Set a specific amount of time that they are allowed to use the device.  Make them eat supper without using their device.  One of the best motivational tools to get what you want from your child is to take away the device if they do not meet your expectations.

4.       The internet is a changing place
You will not be able to keep up with all the new technology that is taking place today.  Allow your child to teach you about the new technology that is out there and how to use it.  It is a great way to have conversations with your child about what they are learning.  It also allows you to build a trusting relationship with your child.

5.       Cyber bullying, Sexting and Predators
We can ignore issues or not teach our children about things that are happening in society but if they do not know what you expect how can you blame them for doing inappropriate things.  Talk to your child about the many different forms of bullying that takes place.  Does your child understand the consequences of sending pictures of themselves over the internet or through a text message?  There are many people out there preying on the youth of America.  Do not chat with people on the internet and give out your personal information.
